15-07-31. Day 111 Real Trail, Real Nice – Mark Trail CDT

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

P1040592  We were camped at 9,000 ft and had a great night with the full moon shining bright. We were hiking at 6:15 am. We hiked two miles to Goldstone Pass where we were suppose to get water but we stayed on the 9,300 to 9,800ft ridge with beautiful views to the east. We hiked an additional six miles to our first water of the day. That’s a twenty one mile section without water. We did great on three litters but if it was hotter, four would have been better. We dropped down to a low of 7,400 ft before we began to climb again.     ContactPhoto-IMG_20150731_173846We had dinner at Hamby Creek and met Elena and Will from England, another couple that are true south-bounders.

We hiked another three miles to the edge of a thousand foot drop in elevation that we will save for tomorrow morning.

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

As we were drinking our coffee Smurf gave Flop and I an update as to his physical condition… “My left knee has an issue and the pain in my side is back”. The new Osprey Amos pack is not helping. “Well let’s take two vitamin I and see what’s up”…..I said.

P1040542
P1040555

It didn’t take very long to see we were not going to make it to Darby like this. Lemhi Pass was 6 miles away so I turned my phone on and amazingly I had coverage. I called Sam and the angel that he is agreed to pick up Smurf at 10:00 am. Smurf worked through the pain and hiked without one complaint. Tough dude. We were sad Smurf couldn’t continue and happy Sam could pick him up in the middle of nowhere. Again we were two.

20150730_103526

We had a twenty mile section to hike without water so we filled up at Lemhi Pass. Smurf met a south-bounder that said there was water off trail in six miles. Four litters of water for six miles or one? Humm. I will carry one, then three. That’s better.

We bushwhacked to Patti Creek and loaded up with three liters of cow flavored water. We hiked back up the trail and found a great place to camp at 9,000 ft on the divide. I love camping high. We even had phone service but much to late to call anyone. I caught up on my blog and uploaded a few.

15-07-29.  Day 109.  Cruising Again – Mark Trail CDT

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

I had a lot to do before Sam gave us a ride back to Bannock Pass. I packed my backpack last night but still had some last minute packing. I boxed up three packages to send. One to myself in Boulder, return the OR gloves that only one was in the box, and the solar charger is not working.

At 7:00 I walked into Sam’s kitchen and he had made fresh home-fries. We fried the bacon and eggs….and drank all his coffee. At 8:00 am I ran to the Post Office to see Sandy at the counter. She  helped me get the boxes packed just right and I was out the door in fifteen minutes

P1040538  Poppa Smurf, Flop, and Sam were ready to go so I grabbed my pack and jumped into Sam’s truck. It is a 15 mile ride on dirt road back to Bannock Pass. The time went fast as I finished off the popcorn and coffee. Nice combo.

P1040541
P1040542

We hugged Sam goodbye. What a wonderful person. Wow…..The hike was amazing compared to Mondays hike. We hiked the Divide most of the day. Grizzly Hill and skirted Goat Mountain. We loaded up on water at an unnamed spring that will need to last us for ten miles to Lemhi Pass. At 8:00 pm we found a campsite and turned in.

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail

Really didn’t sleep that well  with all the activities pending….. And coffee I drank. Around 3:00am I drifted off to sleep. At 5:00 am the biological clock said “GET UP”. But I needed to sleep in. At 7:00 I checked the main house, Sam’s home and coffee and breakfast was ready…. Wow….the magic continues.

P1040523
20150729_071154

We walked down to the PO at 8:00 am and picked up our food resupply for the next 120 miles to Darby Mt. I also bought some storage pouches from Gossamer Gear since the Osprey Atmos hip belt pockets are worthless. Also a mp3 player. The idea of using the phone for music hasn’t worked out since it drains the battery and the Suntastic S5 solar charger is broken. Lots of details that make the hike just a little stressful.

20150728_110711

At 10:00 am Smurf drove up with his Big smile and a great big bear hug… So Nice. Moonwalker sent us a BOX full of my favorite yummy chocolate chip cookies.. Thanks Moongirl.. Since he had his car, we drove to Salmon, ID for lunch and for Flop to make his return travel plans back to California in a week. More change….

P1040526
P1040527

We stopped by the grocery and picked up some salad and a chicken for a celebration of Smurf’s 71st birthday…..Celebrate!    20150728_191558Sam’s Mom and Dad, Perl and Fred,  stopped by along with neighbors, Mark and Tater for an exciting evening of watching a State Trooper arrest a truck driver for DUI.

When Memphis hiked by as we were setting up our tents he mentioned rain and snow. The sky was heavily overcast and fog was blowing over the ridge as we hiked.

ContactPhoto-IMG_20150727_071404We stopped by the spring when Heart Breaker and Hiker Box walked through the woods looking for the spring. We talked about having Sam pick us up at the pass. We had fifteen miles to hike so we did the boogie.

P1040517

As we climbed to 9,000 ft it began to rain. When we reached the top of Elk Mtn at 10,340 ft we were in a full blown snow storm. Flop asked me to lead but my glasses were frozen with snow. We found a saddle but couldn’t find the trail. I was wet and freezing and began to shake. We decided to set up out tents to block the wind before we couldn’t. By the time I got into my then and out of my wet cloths and into some dry clothes I was in full stage one hypothermia. I was uncontrollable shaking. I shoved some of Flops delicious gorp in the pie hole, chomped it up and promptly fell asleep.   ContactPhoto-IMG_20150727_124136  Around 12:00 pm Johnny Z hiked by in shorts. It had stopped snowing and my tent was covered in three inches of snow. Flopped yelled “What do you want to do?”  Humm Stay in my tent and sleeping bag sounded like a great idea…..” I’ll buy you dinner if we go” Oh boy…Food is a BIG motivator. It was ten miles to Banning Pass where Sam will drive up and take you to his Leadore Inn for a hot shower…. “LET’S GO”. As soon as we started packing up it started to rain. Then snow….I could feel the rain run down my back, into my pants, and soak my only once dry long underwear. Now we were living on the edge. I turned on my phone and luckily got reception and Sam answered. See you in three hours. Nice. We hiked as fast as we could and when we reached the pass, Sam was there thirty minutes early with the heater running…..  P1040522         Sam thank you So Much…..

We  climbed up to 9,500 ft, then down and up over and over and over ranging between 8,200 ft and 9,700 ft. We passed Coyote Creek, then  Morrison Lake. There were four mountain bikers warning us of the steep climbed. They should have warned us of the wrong turn we made hiking a half mile straight up to a dead end…… Bummer. Back down and back on the trail.

We started meeting south-bounders. First Patrick and Jeanine from Switzerland, then Scallywag, Easily Distracted, Veggie, and The Darkness. I met The Darkness on the AT, PCT, and now the CDT…..small world. Then Andy, Leah, Action and Short Stack. Last but not least, Memphis. It was a lot of fun meeting everyone and we needed to get in 21 miles so we hiked late and camped at the Spring on the actual Continental Divide.

There has to be birds to wake me up. It’s the only way. It was 5:15 am and still no birds. Flop chirped “Good Morning Mark Trail” . I guess that’s going to have to suffice. No birds… Very strange.   P1040423  We hiked on some amazing trail to Deadman Lake. We then chose the most direct route north….which was straight up…..Soon we were without trail. No worries,  maybe a little stressful but just a typical day on the CDT

15-07-24. Day 104  Buffalo Spring – Mark Trail CDT

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

P1040419     Little did we know……, well there was a lot of cow poop,…….. that we made camp in the cows favorite camping spot. Sometime during the night, there was a stampede of cows through camp. “Are you OK Trail?” Flop yelled out. “Yep, You?” We survived.     P1040392  We made coffee and started at our regular time of 6:15 am. We hike to the Sawmill trail head and promptly got misplaced. When ever the trail losses you, always hike straight uphill. You will always run into the trail. Well…..Maybe sometimes.

P1040400
P1040404

Back on the trail and climbing up 2,000 ft to 9,400 ft we took a break and relished in the moment of how blessed we were to be here. Flop has gone through two bouts of leukemia. He is doing great and I am having a tough time keeping up with him.

We had thirteen miles to Buffalo Spring and then no water for thirteen miles. We decided to have dinner for lunch and then load up on water at Buffalo Spring.

ContactPhoto-IMG_20150724_122559
ContactPhoto-IMG_20150723_141928

We met Sleepwalker and Whistle, the first true southbounders. YEA, There is a hiker other than a flipper. We gave them some tips on the next the few miles and the did the same.

P1040413
20150724_154300

We needed to get water so when we saw the sign for buffalo spring, we read the map and it said hike uphill and look for the pipe. Well it didn’t say a quarter mile uphill. And it didn’t say there was a new pipe attached to the old pipe that ran the water down to the saddle a quarter mile north of where we stopped. Do you kinda get the picture of a hour of running around to figure out all we had to do was hike the trail to the saddle to get water. Very frustrating. …..Did I say VERY?…

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

It was back to Jan’s. I already ate a frozen dinner left over from yesterday’s grocery run. Flop had the #2 with ham… How can you resist?

P1040365 We packed up and at 8:00 am Mike had us rolling down the road, back to the exact spot where he picked us up.. How did he remember?

P1040377
P1040379

Flop and I began our climb back into the mountains. We heard we were going to be going up and down but I had no idea if was going to be ALL DAY.  I mean straight up and straight down. Some one played a joke and we actually hiked around one peak… What were they thinking? I needed to climb another peak……or two…..or twenty.

P1040368
20150723_145002

And to top it off we needed it to storm. Yes ..No trees, Balds for as far as you can see, and lightning and thunder. Now that’s what I call real CDT adventure. The views and landscape were something I have never seen before. Flop said it was his favorite day hiking.

We met Poppi, and Axel hiking south and since it was raining and I was climbing straight up, gasping for air, we didn’t spend a lot of time talking. A real shame.   20150723_144851  We took an “alternate purple route” down to Shineberger Creek and hiked to Little Beaver Creek to camp.

Hiking the Continental Divide Trail

Mark Trail CDT 2015

Jan’s has a reputation for great breakfasts. We all got the #2, 2 with ham, 1 with sausage. It was a special time, first it’s my birthday and second Smurf was leaving for Lander, Wyoming at 8:30 AM. Joe decided to drive Smurf six hours south to get his car and medical attention. I think it was to get away from Flop and me.

Joe drove up on time and off they went, Hugs and Waves.  Now it was Flop and me, the North-bounders.

We went to the Post Office for our food boxes filled with five days of food. The schedule is tight with 100 miles in five days….. We will see.

Mike was driving to Dillon to get some supplies so we asked to tag along. First stop Sharkey’s for a Birthday lunch. Flop found his fried onion rings and I had a steak sandwich. Thanks Flop for treating me like a king. It was perfect. Mike dropped us off downtown to walk around while he ran some errands. We stopped by the grocery store to get some salad and fruit to carry out of town.    20150722_194654 Flop and I drank Moose Drool and ate salad with brownies for desert. Hiking the Continental Divide Trail

P1040303

P1040346

We knew there would not be any water till we were able to reach I-15 where we were going to go to the Mountain View Motel in Lima Montana. Mike and Connie are very nice to CDT hikers and GDT bikers. Both trails cross near Lima. We were hiking along the actual Continental Divide which is rare. We criss-cross it multiple times but not along it very often.

P1040332

We met Beads, Machine Gun, Hand Stand, and Kramers hiking out of town, hiking south. They spoke very highly of Mike and Connie.  I met Beads in Ashland, while hiking the PCT in 2012. It is a small world and was nice seeing her and the happy group of hikers. They gave us lots of tips. We shared smiles and hiked on…. See you down the trail of life.

P1040331
P1040354

We were dropping in elevation and I was watching Poppa Smurf dropping his left shoulder.  “What’s up Snurf? My side is really painful” was his reply…. “Can I help? No thank you” . The standard responce….as expected…

The ultra light packs have hip belts incorporated into the packs. They pinch and for me…uncomfortable. For a weekend, Maybe ok… You hurt all over anyway, but for a long distance hike….I question. The full separate hip belts are my choice. Another lesson learned.

We were carrying over two liters of water so we were heavy. The weight of the water and belt configuration dug into Smurfs side irritating something on his side.. Maybe a hernia. The pain grew and was painful to watch. We traded packs to see if my hip belt might fit better. The Osprey Atmos also has a pinch belt and hurts. Flops ULA Catalyst has hip belt is separate from the pack and removable. That will be my next pack in the never ending quest for the best gear.

We reached the service road and called Mike to come and get us. The rain clouds caught up to us, gave us a washing as we danced to the sounds of the Rolling Stones on the short two mile road walk. Mike pulled up and we were off to a much needed break.

20150722_083830   Smurf met Joe at Jan’s Cafe as we were having dinner. Joe had a Green Bay hat on and Smurf is from Green Bay and needed help. Joe was traveling around Montana and agreed to drive Smurf back to Lander WY to get his car and some medical advice. Well another change in the all together separate group.

Back at the room Smurf packed up and we were sad and happy at the same time…

15-07-20.  Day 100. Blain and Sunshine – Mark Trail CDT

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

I woke early so I could boil water like the good old days in the 1980’s. It was a honor to make hot water for everyone. It really wasn’t a big deal back then. We were using gasoline and it was plentiful. Today we have canister or alcohol fuel and times are different. It is real nice hiking with Flop and Poppa Smurf. If they didn’t stay in Old Faithful Village, I would be hiking alone……I am truly blessed.

P1040215
P1040226
P1040211

The trail and trail signs were great. We passed several campsites with bear boxes and picnic tables…Wow. Very nice trail work and bridges… Unfortunately it only lasted for a few miles and the trail slowly drifted into the CDT we know. Tall grass, blow-downs, no tread and soon we were off trail. We had to back track and  climb up, over, around, and through. Soon we were back on trail and started climbing up to The Continental Divide.

P1040244
P1040245

As we hiked. Blain rode up on Sunshine his beautiful horse, and while Sunshine and Poppa Smurf had a love fest, Blain proceeded to give us all kinds of tips hiking north. It helps hiking when the locals have so much information on the areas we are hiking through. Sunshine really made the day, such a loving horse.

We squeezed two liters of water at West Dry Spring and hiked another 45 minutes at 7:45 pm. It was the first day in weeks that I didn’t ford some stream, just to have my sneekers dry out to have to ford another.  There are foot bridges in Idaho… Yea!!!  We looked for a campsite..we found a great site and went fishing…….No we did not go fishing. 15-07-18  Day 98 Contour Lines – Mark Trail CDT

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

We awoke at our normal hour and packed up and met at the Office to drop off our keys. Thanks Macks Inn for a great stay.

We left at 6:15 am  and hiked the two miles to the Sawtelle Town area. Connie’s didn’t open till 8:00 am so we had a cup of coffee at the general store. I was feeling great for the first time since Duboise. I bought a half gallon of Moose Tracks ice cream. Bad decision….. Even though I ate two lactace pills everything started rumbling. We said goodbye to Why Wait and Moonwalker and started our climb out of Mack’s Inn.

As we hiked up towards Sawtelle Peak, ATVs  sped by, blowing up dust. I flagged down cars and ATV’s and asked then to slow down so we could breath.  Everyone, decided to help us out and slowed down. We left the road after climbing 3,000 ft . From 6,200 ft to 9000 ft. Wow. Just after crossing into Montana, we began bushwhacking and came upon a monument, noting that we where at the most remote source for the headwaters of the Missouri River. We took some pics and hiked on. Soon we got into trouble crossing a steep slope. You could see the tight couture lines on the map that you always want to avoid. We all slid down the loose scree at one time or another. With a stream flowing below us down a ever steepening gorge with steep cliffs above, we were not in a good situation. Very dangerous and luckily no one got hurt. We crossed a creek and climbed straight up to the official CDT, filled our water bottles, and found a campsite. We were worn out…..

Every one was eager to start hiking but we had to have our morning coffee. It was Why Wait and Moonwalker’s last morning on the trail. We all enjoyed our time together knowing change was coming.

As we hiked closer to Macks Inn, we started to pass homes and camps.. ATVs are the transportation of choice around here. I have no idea why…but it is big, really big. The locals would slow down as they passes by us since we were hiking a dirt road to avoid the dust.

Soon we were at the PO and I picked up my food box for the next section to Lima, MT.

We arrived at the Inn and walked across the bridge to have a Mexican lunch. We went back to the inn and cleaned up for our second feeding of pizza. It was a great section we had  just finished and I was happy and sad at the same time. We celebrated our last night together and made plans to hike together two miles north for breakfast and then split…

At 4:30 Flop got up to go. I said to Poppa. ” Might as well get up”. I was still sick and needed a shower to clean up. Smurf said he had some imodium so I took one. I still have some off brand but I think the Imodium I have is worthless. 20150715_224650   We went into the lobby and nobody was there. We had the whole Old Faithful Lodge to ourselves. I asked Flop to take a picture of me in front of the front door. As I looked to my right, I could see Old Faithful spewing off.

The trail circled Old Faithful then headed North as we weaved around all the minor geysers in the upper basin. We then climbed up to the plateau and cruised to the Idaho border. We celebrated entering a new state and the accomplishment we each individually and collectively achieved. A great hiking group.

We were conflicted. We wanted to catch up to Flop, Pop, and Wait, and we wanted to experience Yellowstone’s Old Faithful. We were lucky that no one showed up to camp in the site we stayed in. We hiked to Lone Star geyser. It erupts every three hours and we missed the last blast by a hour. May next time.    P1040070 As we decedent into Old Faithful Village I texted everyone as to where we were. Poppa Smurf replied he was at the Inn. What? They waited for us!!!!  What great friends.

I stopped by the clinic and found out it was $200.00 just to talk to the Dr. I needed Flagyl, I knew I had diarrhea. I decided to wait and call my Dr. In Jacksonville and pick up the medicine in West Yellowstone.

20150715_091652

The lobby of the Old Faithful Inn is amazing. It was the first lodge build of its kind and was quickly copied at other parks. We met Smurf and he let us put our packs in his room while we showered and tried to get a room. We did laundry and then went  sightseeing. The geyser basin is incredible. Steam and boiling water everywhere.

When you accept Trail Magic off trail there is always the question as to how do you get back on the trail. Moonwalker asked that before we said yes to dinner. Greg agreed to get up at 5:00 and drive us back. Amazing!!!

P1040043As I was packing up, I could not find my OR Foray Rain Pants… Oh Noo. A serious problem since they are my pants. My only pants. After looking in the bathroom and laundry room, Greg offered his size too big wind pants to my and I had to accept. It was cold and I needed pants.

P1040045

We arrived at the trail-head at 6:15 and we sadly said goodbye and started hiking. We were hiking fast and came to Shoshone Lake by 8:15 am. There was suppose to be a chest high ford of the Lewis River but luckily only knee high.

As we were climbing up 200 ft. Matt, a CDT flip flopper passed us hiking south. That’s number three we have seen. There will be the meeting of the guys I started with soon.. Can’t wait.

P1040060
P1040059

Moonwalker found a note on the maps where Union Geyser runs into the Shoshone Creek making very special place to soak. It took us a while to find it and it was well worth it. You had to mix the cold creek water with the boiling Geyser water to make if enjoyable.

P1040053We soaked and we’re back on the trail refreshed.

P1040055

The next stop was Lone Star Geyser. As we were getting close we knew we were not going to make it to the next Campsite past Yellowstone Village. I was still sick and needed to see if I could get some help at the clinic. There were three campsites near Lone Star and we picked the one the farthest away thinking it might not be used. Although it was a little after 5:00, it gave us time to catch up on post cards and blog.

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

P1040041 We were hiking at 6:00 am because it was a big day. I needed to get some help and the gang had 20 miles to hike. We also wanted to dip in the hot pools along the Heart Lake Geyser Basin.P1040042

We followed the contour of Heart Lake for miles. The trail then veered north we looked for where the boiling hot springs mixed with the cool river water. We couldn’t find the magic spot so we hiked on. After many hours, we came to the road and we said our goodbyes and hitched to Grants Village. After a short wait, we got a great ride. I asked at the store as to where the post office is and got a Gatorade and some bland crackers, and some bananas.I ate two pieces of bread hiking to the road and everything seemed to be getting better. I ate a banana and some pretzel. Maybe I am getting better and Don ‘t need to see a DR. We packed up two boxes of foods to forward, one to Lima and the other to Leador.

We stopped in the store one last time and picked up a sandwich and salad for Moonwalker . I bought a Gatorade and a pack of turkey meat. We hiked back to main highway and the hitched along the way. Greg, Tamara, and Jose made room for us in the van and as we got close the the trail head, asked if we wanted a shower and dinner……Hard choices. A Hot Shower, Pork Chops, Corn, Rice and Salad. Moonwalker had to eat my S’more which topped off a amazing day.  Nice Trail Magic.

The sky was darkening and the wind was building. Soon it was raining. Raining hard. I had my Go Lite umbrella up and had to tilt it to the west to keep it from turning inside out. Since it was raining so hard, we found a spot under a group of pine trees to shed the rain while we ate lunch.

We soon came to the ” Horse Super Highway” . It was a sea of mud. No matter which channel you hiked you were in mud. The trail was a main  thorofare from Cody to Jackson. Packers hauled all kinds of paying riders and all kinds of comfort crap to earn their fees.

P1030911

As we turned the corner of North Fork Meadow, a mirage of a packers tent with a hot warm fire appeared. “Want some soup and coffee?”.    Poppa and I responded…”Oh yes, Thank you”…I love packers and horses….

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

We all met at the Cobbler at 6:15 am. My stomach was feeling better but just not right. I had two hard fried eggs and sausage. Humm.. 20150707_171021

We loaded up and Dan drove us back to Towotee Pass. Poppa Smurf, Why Wait, Flop, Moonwalker and me. Dan and Mary were headed back to Boston and Jellybean headed back to Phoenix for personal reasons.

P1030853
P1030854

Smurf found the unmarked trail and we hiked the three miles to Brooks Lake Lodge. They are on the trail and hold boxes for hikers but with a three night minimum and 200.00 a night we were priced out.

Jason retrieved our box with “four days food” which was packed full..The gang was going to wait for us at the feared Buffalo Creek crossing so we quickly split the food and loaded our packs.

P1030855
P1030856

The lodge is a trail head for packers which means horses. Lots of horses and lots of mud. It started raining right away. The trail was hard to hike in. Actually there was multiple trails. All were full of mud. We followed Brooks Lake Creek to Bear Cub Pass. We are now both packing bear pepper spray and very alert as to our surroundings. Maybe we will see a bear today.

P1030863

When we arrived to South Buffalo Fork, Flop, Why Wait, and Poppa Smurf were waiting for us on the other side. The water was milky light brown. It was flowing fast and you couldn’t see how deep it was. “Work your way upstream near this spot”  Why Wait said. It was fast and it was deep. The boys almost went for a swim but made it out just it time.

P1030860

We hiked a little farther with a great view. We all hung out food with Moonwalker being the bear rope master thrower. As we went to bed I wasn’t feeling to well with a sour stomach.

My stomach was upset when I woke up. We met the gang at the Cobbler at 7:30 am. I couldn’t eat and felt like I was going to pass out.  I ran back to our room and back to the bathroom and went back to bed. By noon the Imodium started working but now all the food I needed to recharge was gone. Moonwalker got me some Gatorade, Yogurt, Pretzels, and bananas. Just what the Internet said I could eat. By 2:00 I was feeling better and Flop suggested I send the two food boxes to Lima and Leador. He gave me a lot of food and the rest I bought at the store and mailed it off.

Moonwalker and I went out to dinner and even though my stomach was queezy I had a great dinner.

Town is a real motivator. We were up at 4:00 am and hiking at 5:15 am. The rain was still clinging and freezing cold. We found an old Forest Service road that had knee high grass covering it. Out feet were freezing and wet.

We were not having any luck finding a ride. I think it was my beard and glasses. After 45 minutes and just before we were going to quit, Ollie stopped and picked us up. We called the Stagecoach Motel and booked a room. I needed rest. We did our town stuff and went out to dinner at the cobbler. I had a ruben sandwich that was delicious. We went back to the room and the gang of six were going out. Dan and Mary, Poppa Smurf, Flop, Why Wait, and Jellybean. By the time I finished my salad my stomach was in a knot. By the time I made it to the restroom, I was in trouble. I want back to our room and took an Imodium. Every fifteen minutes till 2:00 am. Oh boy…

As I was visiting the outdoor potty I could hear Moonwalker talking.. Jellybean came walking up. We haven’t seen any CDT hikers since South Pass.. Wow..

P1030807

We finished packing up and caught up to Poppa Smurf, Why Wait, Flop, and JellyBean. They were all section hiking that started on June 20th the same day we had. They were friends that met on various previous hikes. I collected their emails and hiked on.

P1030825

We would stop, they would pass. They would stop, We would pass.

We found a beautiful spring gushing cold, clear, delicious water… Do we filter… No…  Hummm…..

P1030818

After we ate lunch, we looked on the map and there were two ways to go. One way had a cross country shortcut… What do you think? The group went one way, we took the “Short Cut”.. After a half mile I was thinking…. What was I thinking?… It was a hard traverse but we made it. It looked like we were the only hikers that took the route for years… The trail was overgrown easily lost. To make it more interesting the black clouds started to roll in. We filtered some water even though there were beaver dams along the creek. Not my idea of the best source but we needed water…

We crossed the creek and found a spot to eat. The wind picked up as the storm approached. We rushed to set up the tent just in time to escape the downpour…. YES!!

We walked over the bridge at the end of Green River Lakes at 6:20 am.  The sky was overcast so perfect light to take pictures of flowers as we hiked from 8,000 ft to 10,130 ft at Gunsight Pass.

It was 11:00 am, time for lunch and time for rain. It rained hard off and on for three hours. Our feet were soaking wet for the third day in a row. Between the rain, wet grass and multiple stream crossings my feet look like shriveled up white prunes.

We were making great time as we approached Lake of the Woods. Moonwalker yelled ” Look at the Moose”. Right in front of me was a momma Moose and her calf. Then a few minutes later as we were hiking past the lake, a Bald Eagle flew out of a tree. The rain stopped, and the sun came out in time for dinner as we crossed Salt Creek

Woke up to a beautiful view. The snow-melt falls that were near our tent provided white noise for a great nights sleep. As we hiked the sun was coming up. The shadows in the high lakes were spectacular.

We were at 11,000 ft and climbed to Shannon Pass the Cube Rock  Pass. That is where the fun began. First we were rock scrambling along a  steep side of an unnamed peak.

We soon came to a 60° Snow slide. I kicked in footsteps reminiscing of Colorado.  I was relieved when I reached the other side but had to watch Moonwalker cross knowing there was nothing I could do if she slipped. She did great and around the next corner…Yep another just as steep but smaller. We decided to climb down the rocks and back up the other side of the slide to avoid any surprises.

We dropped down and then a short hike up to Vista Pass. From there we dropped all day following the headwaters of the Green River.  The river was actually green and roaring filled with snow melt. We forded several feeder streams and thankfully there was a bridge when we crossed the River.

P1030646.We had dinner with the mosquitoes at the first of two lakes that made up the Green Lakes. There was a Campground on the map at the base of the second lake where we wanted to get showers but no luck. Only a pit toilet. We camped near the campground in the woods.

Hiking The Continental Divide Trail
Mark Trail CDT 2015

We were hiking at 5:45 am. There was some animal moaning all night. It sounded like it was caught in a trap.. Every fifteen minutes….eeeekkkkk—–!

P1030363
P1030364

Moonwalker came hiking back towards me. “What’s up?” As I looked to the left, hundreds of Elk were grazing. Hundreds. Then the moaning. It was the Elk, crying from being bitten by the mosquitoes all night long

P1030428
P1030425

By 6:30 am we were fording creeks, Sheep’s Creek, Raid Creek, South Ford Boulder, and lots more. Lakes: Cross, Raid, Dream, Bobs, Sandpoint, Howard, North Fork, August, Rambaud. Lots of lakes.. And lots of mosquitoes. .. Amazingly we had lunch without mosquitoes, but only at lunch. It was a miracle.

We hiked till 5:00 pm, made spaghetti and set up the tent to eat in. At 6:15 we looked at the map and not a lot of options for camping ahead so we stopped.

We watched the sun shine on the tops of the peaks and slowly illuminate the Cirque range. We started our climb up Texas Pass by hiking around Lonesome Lake. There really wasn’t a trail per say. There was a way with cairns spaced far apart. The pass was still snowed in so we hiked east along the rocks.

P1030313
P1030327

We climbed from 10,480 ft to 11,300 ft to Texas Pass. I was relieved to see the west side of the pass was snow free but steep. Real steep. The hiking was slow all the way sliding on the loose gravel as we dropped 700 ft. to 10,580 ft.

When we got to the Shadow Lake Trail the hiking was much easier. We followed the Washakie Creek till we got back on the CDT.

The mosquitoes were horrific. Never giving us a break. Just before Sheep Creek we set up the tent to give us a break and called it a day.

Sheep Creek.        11 miles
